Ken Carter, a Marietta City Schools (MCS) science and physical education
teacher at Woods-Wilkins is the recipient of a Georgia Association for Health, Physical

The Atlanta Opera at Hickory Hills Elementary School, Nov. 19
The Atlanta Opera, will conduct a “What is Opera?” workshop for fourth grade students at Hickory Hills Elementary on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, featuring mezzo-soprano Adriana Zabala, who sings the role of Cinderella for the Nov. 20 student performances of that opera, and principal coach and accompanist Craig Kier. The event is made possible by Hickory Hills’ partnership with the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center Education Department.
MHS Hosts IB Orientation for 8th Graders, Nov. 20 and Dec 8
Marietta High School will host an International Baccalaureate (IB) Orientation meeting on Nov. 20 and Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. All Middle school students interested in applying to the IB Program in 9th grade should attend. Choice Academies Information Session, Dec. 10
A Choice Academies information session is scheduled Dec. 10, 2008 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Cobb Central Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta. This informative session will help parents and community members learn more about the Choice Academies application process, and the unique academic programs offered at each school.

Dunleith Food Drive a Success, Nov. 13-18

Over 650 items were collected during the Dunleith Elementary food drive to benefit the Center for Family Resources. Other district schools are also collecting food items as part of the project led by Marietta City school counselors.
Middle School Student Performs at High Museum, Nov. 11
Marietta Middle School eighth-grader Madeleine Harris likes to dance. She recently performed at the High Museum of Art’s "The First Emperor: China's Terracotta Army" exhibit on Nov. 11, 2008. Her favorite Chinese dance is the ribbon dance. Photos»
MCAA Empty Bowls Fundraiser a Success, Nov. 11
Marietta Center for Advanced Academics hosted the Empty Bowls Project on Nov. 11. Fourth grade students created glazed clay bowls, and the proceeds from the sale of the bowls were donated to MUST Ministries to help put food in their pantry. Those purchasing bowls at the event used them for a soup kitchen meal of soup, bread and water. The school presented a check for $760 to MUST Ministries on Nov. 13.
Park Street Panther Green Team, Nov. 10
Park Street’s recycling and environmental awareness team, the Panther Green Team, of 4th and 5th graders completes weekly paper collection from all Park Street Elementary classrooms. To date the team has saved almost 3 tons of paper from the landfill. Last week, the students had an opportunity to thank their sponsor, James Moore of the Target Corporation for their new aprons.

Adopt-a-Grandparent Program
Park Street Elementary second graders visit Cobb Seniors as part of their Adopt-a-Grandparent community service project. Students share the gift of literacy as they read books to seniors during their visits. The members enjoyed the children and even remembered the jokes. We look forward to the next visit, said Sabrina Hudson, program director at the Cobb Senior Center. More»
Park Street 3rd Graders Experience Amazon, Nov. 7
As part of its collaboration with the Cobb Art Place, Park Street students are learning about science through art and literature. On Nov. 7, students learned how to visually represent the characteristics of different rainforest plants. The program is funded in part by a Target Grant.

“Be There”, is Marietta City Schools’ district-wide parental involvement campaign. “Be There” is a national program designed to inspire parents to become more involved in the education of their children.
Middle School Parent and Student Guide to Mathematics
This support booklet has been written for middle school parents and students. Contents include a brief explanation of the new math curriculum, ways to study mathematics, math vocabulary, important dates, and parent resources on the Internet.

Technology and Learning Conference
Marietta City Schools’ educators Linda Hutchinson, Nancy Dodd, MSGA Principal Dayton Hibbs, and Jennifer Bundy recently presented “Implementing a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Program from the Ground Up”, to educators from around the country, at the 2008 Technology and Learning Conference.
Employee of the month

Kelly Herrero teaches Government in the IB Pre-diploma program at Marietta High School. She began her career with Marietta City Schools in 1998. Described by her peers as "the kind of teacher every student wants and really needs," Kelly uses unique and innovative projects in her classes to introduce students to different aspects of government. Recently, she organized a Presidential election viewing party where over 100 students from different grade levels got to watch the election results.
Student of the month

Eighth-grade, magnet student Madeleine Morgan Lan Harris is an amazing young lady. Madeleine is a high-achiever and always strives for perfection in everything she does. She is always on time and focused, and she excels in all of her classes. Currently she has a 100 average in her French class. Madeline loves to dance. She recently performed at the High Museum of Art's "The First Emperor: China's Terracotta Army" exhibit on Nov. 11, 2008.
